9 Types of Insecure Coaches: Overcoming Personal Fears for Effective Coaching

Remember those demotivational posters that would pop up…Ones like this one:

They were funny because they were making fun of something that’s there but that we’re not always honest about.

If I created one, it would say:

COACHING: Helping The CEO Feel Enlightened About Crappy Results

We see this sometimes, where people are made to feel okay even though the job wasn’t done.

Whether you coach people professionally or you’re a leader with a desire to effectively coach your team members, this can be the hardest part about understanding human performance.

Being in the coaching industry myself, I see how bad the field can be. Like any other field, it has the strugglers at the bottom, the survivors in the middle, and the impactful few at the top. This pattern is similar in organizations where leaders take on coaching roles with their teams.

To truly excel in coaching others, we have to break beyond our insecurities and the quest for validation. Transformational coaching isn’t about just feeling good—it’s about achieving real change.

There are 9 types of coaches who are held back from their insecurities. (Remember, this applies to all leaders, not just those with the ‘title’ of a coach.)

1. CODEPENDENT COACH

» Your Fear: Not Being Needed

» Your Superpower: Transforming the person you’re leading to be independent, while being a rock they can lean on

2. EXTERNAL DISTRACTION COACH

» Your Fear: Not Being Cared For

» Your Superpower: Boldly inspiring the person you’re leading to seek adventure within and without

3. FORCED SMILER COACH

» Your Fear: Not Belonging

» Your Superpower: Helping the person you’re leading feel a special connection to their world

4. OVERTHINKING COACH

» Your Fear: Inadequacy

» Your Superpower: Helping the person you’re leading take new risks and show up in new ways

5. HUMBLE BRAGGER COACH

» Your Fear: Poor Performance

» Your Superpower: Helping the person you’re leading perform at high levels and inspire others to do the same

6. MORALITY COACH

» Your Fear: Being a Bad person

» Your Superpower: Helping the person you’re leading become wise as they navigate the gray

7. INDECISIVE COACH

» Your Fear: Bad Outcomes

» Your Superpower: Helping the person you’re leading find internal strength while they fortify against real danger

8. COMBATIVE COACH

» Your Fear: Vulnerability

» Your Superpower: Helping the person you’re leading become interpersonally powerful and use that strength to build others

9. TOO MANY WORDS COACH

» Your Fear: Being Replaceable

» Your Superpower: Helping the person you’re leading become the greatest and best version of who they can become

Great coaches and leaders have the ability to affirm personhood while encouraging the highest level of performance.

They’re able to separate the WHO from the WHAT.

They can transform and turn their fears into their superpowers.

And you can be that kind of leader as well. It starts with learning to lead yourself first.

When you build the awareness of how you’re operating from insecurities and fears, you will separate who you are from what you do. From there, you can lead for impact, not validation.
